National
Women’s Football League
2000
The
NWFA got its start as the NWFL, National Women’s Football
League in 2000 with a two-team, six-game exhibition schedule. In
2001 the league expanded to eight teams and plays its games in the
spring. The league changed its name to appease the NFL,
which argued that the names were too similar. NWFA teams have been
featured on nationwide television, and some individual franchises
enjoy partnerships with the NFL teams in their cities. The league
has grown in each of its seasons, and is already planning future
expansion.
The
game ball is a Wilson junior-size model, the same size ball that
other women’s leagues use.
